Our January Meeting was on January 1st. We had a Silent Auction for Hopsice and the Guild Library. There was 5-6 tables full of sewing items. People were bidding high on several items... Always a fun night. Show and tell was great too. We had a few people bring back batik blocks from fabric that was given out at the Chrismas party. Those blocks will be put into future hospice quilts. Next meeting will be February 6th! See you then!

This post comes very late in the month. Sorry for the late post. We had our Christmas party on December 5th. Lots of great food was shared. We played a fun ripping game, of course, there were some people claiming that people were cheating by pulling the sewn fabric and ripping (with their hands...) Of course it worked, but wasnt quite part of the rules of the game. It ended with Peggy and Clare competing to be the fastest ripper... Pretty much ended in a tie. Good to say we are both experienced rippers! There was also some great show and tell. see the pictures below to view the show and tell. January meeting is our White Elephant silent Auction. Bring your unfinished projects or unwanted sewing items to share. We usually have 4-5 tables to choose from. Books, old patterns, old fabric... it all goes. Proceeds go towards our Library or Hospice quilts. I don't know which one, either way it is a good project. See you at the January meeting.

November 2011 meeting

The November meeting was sparcely attended. (I was out of town, also) Liz took pictures of the lesson and the show and tell. She told me some of the things going on... but I don't think I could repeat them all in this message...
Dawn did the lesson for us. They were coloring on fabric and setting them onto the fabric... Looks like there was some awesome artists in the group!
December brings our Christmas Party. We got fabric to particpate in the block exchange. There were two choices to use as background for your choice of a christmas block. You have to make a minimum of two blocks... one wrapped and to exchange, the rest go into a drawing ... the more you make, the more chances you have to win... Should be fun!

Sewing Day - Half Yard Challenge

We had Great fun at our Guild sewing Day, Saturday Oct 29, 2011.
Cherrie showed us a video from Fon's and Porter on doing a "Half Yard C'hallenge"
The tools we needed were the easy angle and the companion angle, 5 coordinating half yard cuts of fabric, other basic rotary cutting equipment and a design wall. (of course your sewing machine).

We didn't have a huge crowd at City Hall, but we had a nice crowd. Plus lots of good snacks. I will post pictures below. Luella, Jackie, Sandy and Lorraine worked on other projects. BettyJane was going to do the project... but I didn't get any picks before she left...:( Cherrie's sample was blue and brown, Liz did a halloween one, (I don't think I got the picture of that! bummer) Teri did a scooby doo fabric, Peggy purples.. Clare lime green, Judy - blues and browns; Diana - kind of harvest colors... ; Cherrie also did one in brights. Megan (Cherrie's daughter) sewed a fun quilt together... her blocks were done... I hope I got that picture... Anyway... We sewed until 7 and cleaned up and were out of there by 7:30..pm It was a great day, If your weren't there... you missed the fun. It was a fun project to work on and see how everyone came up with new ideas.

The process to show pictures from show and tell is no longer available. I am trying something different... Picassa is a program with Google same as we blog with. I have uploaded the pictures to this site, and I believe it will give a link to that site and you can look at the pictures I have uploaded. It looks like it has a lot of storage, so I think this will work... I will also still try to get all the pictures to our shutterfly account... That way if anyone wanted to print pictures they could do it that way. I am learning something new by doing it this way... we may not have slide shows set up in the same way, but the process should be similar... Be patient with me... I will keep working on it.
Guild was great again, Virginia demonstrated how to make a bag for sewing, kindles, or children's electronic games. She also shared how to make a purse out of men's ties. She showed her purse this summer and so many were impressed. Nice she could demonstrate both projects.
Our numbers were low, but we had some great show and tell. Check this out on Picassa... Link should be with this message.
Oct 29th we have a Half-Yard Challenge starting at 9am at city hall. You need 5 different half yard fabrics to do the project. You can also come and just sew on your own project. The project uses an Easy Angle and a Companion Angle to complete the project. Cherrie will be leading the project with a video demonstration. So, come on time and join the party!
Novemember starts our next year of UFO projects... The rules are similar EXCEPT you can include projects/kits that you have not started yet, but purchased. Just have to submitt a list and pay for the items you think you plan to finish in the next year. The UFO's made our quilt show very large this year... Should make next years' show great too! August 2011 meeting

We met on August 1st for our guild meeting... Our lesson was an opportunity to make decorations for our upcoming Quilt show. The quilt show is September 9th and 10th. We should have a great show after finishing the UFO Challenge... Some people finished a huge number of Unfinished Objects... I personally finished 3 large quilts, 4 medium quilts and several table runners... Now it looks like we will start again... I only took 1/3 of my quilts list off my UFO list, and have added several more... It is just ongoing...

I challenged a few people to do a "Fairy Quilt Godmother" quilt from Paperpanache.com In the slide show you should see 3 of the completed quilts... A Fun humorous challenge for those who like to paper piece... I hope to have at least 6 finished quilts at the quilt show...

Our July meeting was a Silent Auction raising money for our hospice quilt supplies. We had a huge amount of items for sale. Kathy R got a lot of her block of her month blocks back... just a few ppl had show and tell... but great meeting... And Yes, Peggy got someone to volunteer to be VP. Thanks Diana Helm... Sewing day is July 16th at City Hall. We would love to have a overnighter this fall.... we need ideas... anyone got a great project? August 1st is our next meeting... Then the Quilt show Sept 9-10th... See you there!

June Meeting 2011

The June meeting was sparsely attended… but never stops the Common Thread quilters from having an awesome meeting… Kathy Repnow gave the lesson on Threads… Kathy will be a rep for Superior threads in our area. She did a lot a research for the lesson and gave handouts on what needles to use for the type of threads… She also has said if you think you would like to try out a color of thread to call her and she will order it to match your projects… She did an awesome job!!!

Check out the show and tell. Thanks to Peggy for taking the pictures from the meeting… looks like great show and tell. Don’t forget to work on the challenge for the quilt show… Plaids and/or stripes… any size, anything.
July meeting will be a White Elephant Sale: Bring any sewing/quilting items that you don’t want to use anymore. The monies raised for the white elephant sale will be used for the CTQG hospice program.
Next open sewing for the guild will be Saturday, July 16th.

May Guild Meeting 2011

Our May meeting brought us nice weather (after a weekend of blizzard). Spring has finally showed up. Some of us thought it would never get here. It was more evident with the faces at the meeting that we could get out more...
Mary Ellen shared a lesson of freezer paper method of paper piecing. No more struggling to get the paper off after the paper piecing is done... Hopefully several of us will be willing to try it out...

I will upload pictures of the show and tell; we have a great group of quilters... I hope you enjoy the slide show... Comment on your favorites... it would be fun to get some more dialog going on this blog... I won't be writing comments on the pictures... as it has been a week since our meeting. I may make some mistakes...

April meeting 2011

Our April lesson was on Machine Quilting Basics. Clare presented the lesson. With many samples of quilting designs from previous classes and quilts made. We had a good discussion about some basic quilting techniques. What is really nice is how our guild shares information. As the situations present themselves.... everyone chips in with valuable information. Exactly what we like about guild. Everyone sharing information and making the lesson, the meeting the show and tell so valuable.

Again, we had some awesome show and tell. Having our UFO challenge sure makes for great show and tell. Imagine what that Fall quilt show will look like! A Galaxy of Quilts... sounds great!

Hello all,
Plan to sit and watch the slide show for a while. We had some awesome show and tell last night. Cheryl Klee took the prize for the most show and tell. She told us she has to stay home when it snows, and then she quilts. We must have had a lot of snow this winter, she had probably 10 quilt tops done! She was not the only one finishing projects: Peggy had several, as did Liz and Diana. You go girls!

Doris shared a lesson on "Snap Happy bags". These were made with cut parts of a metal tape measure. Great lesson. Thanks Doris!

We have a committee for the quilt show in September. We should have an awesome show with all the UFO projects being finished. Teri will head up the committee. She thought we could encorporate the UFO theme into the show. Should be interesting.

February Meeting 2011

Our February meeting came with bitter cold weather... AGAIN! between 10 and 20 below temperatures caused just a few members to venture out for the meeting. This seems to be the norm these past few months. We still had a great meeting. Not many decisions were made at the meeting... we need volunteers, especially to head our Harvest Fest Quilt show coming up in September.

Show and tell was great following a weekend quilting retreat attended by many at the Riverdale Lodge. Reports of 25 attendees reveals it was a popular weekend, despite the ugly weather we had over the weekend.

Several people showed finished UFO projects and even things from the What was I thinking pile... Hope you enjoy the slide show!

Happy New Year 2011

We just had our January meeting. I didn't get anything set up from the December meeting... But we had a great Christmas party. Weather has been the issue this winter. The night of our Christmas party there was blowing snow and not many we in attendance at our Christmas party. What a change from most years. Usually we are a packed house for the party. We still had plenty of goodies to share. Very little show and tell.
January has come and again few were in attendance tonight. We had about 24 people at our meeting. But show and tell was better. Judy and Doris shared quilts they had made in previous years with Christmas blocks won from the block exchange. Interesting/nice that they both chose to share them this month.
We talked about a retreat at the Riverdale lodge the first weeken in Feb. Hopefully an email will go out to members with this information, since it wasn't in the newsletter.
Applique blocks were given out to willing members for the 2011 raffle quilt. The quilt will be made from 30's fabrics. If you are willing to do a block, contact Peggy Cahoon. We will have a raffle quilt work day, January 22. We would like many members to help with putting this togther. We can continue to sew for the rest of the day at city hall.

November 2010 Show and Tell

I hope you enjoy the show and tell from this month. We had a couple people show tops from our National teacher "Jan Krentz" classes. Diana Shull gave us a great lesson on using rulers. She showcased the easy angle, companion angle and a couple others and showed how to make typical blocks using these rulers. Many of us have the tools and don't always use them correctly. She shared tips and ideas as well as her practical advice. If you weren't there, you missed a great lesson.

Toni has a trunk show at her store and she shared a few favorites with the guild. They are all made from simple laminated card patterns.

December brings our Christmas party. Always a treat to come to this meeting... No "business meeting" pure Christmas entertainment. The Stanton ladies are coming up with the activities and guild members bring the treats. Block exchange is an ornament block this year. This could be interesting. I am only uploading a few pictures from the two classes we had with national quilter Jan Krentz. She was awesome to take a class from. Jan likes to give as much personal attention as she can. She is very prepared for class and wants to make sure every particpant comes out with a great experience. She suggests we take pictures with the digital camera and look at the designs through the lens. Amazing what you see through the camera. I will upload all the pictures we took to shutterfly. Check them out there. We took many pictures of the quilts in progress...as we moved the fabrics around to make our final decisions. We should have some great show and tell coming up. Where is the year going... The year is slipping by fast, but still some of our members have been using the time wisely and getting things done. Peggy worked on getting all her patchabilities done (two years of kits) All I can say is WOW! Cheryl had some beautiful quilts too. She told us she was trying to use her 5 inch squares that we exchanged...um... probaby 5 years ago. Then she showed us her paper pieces double wedding ring quilt. Ok, not what most of us will do with our 5 inch squares. We will just name her "Over achiever". Great Job, Cheryl!

Connie had some quilts from her daughter, Nicole. Connie is quilting them for her. VERY FUN! Jackie showed her brown bag quilt set in the BQ fashion. She changed it up a bit, it looks real nice!

I hope to include pictures later this month from our National Quilting Teacher : Jan Krentz. I have heard some people say, "Oh that Hunters Star pattern looks too hard. I don't want to take the class" The best time to take the class is when you have an expert to help. We intend to learn a lot from Jan and will have a social at my house Friday night with her. 7 pm. You don't have to take the class to stop by and meet her. Consider putting that on your schedule. Also consider taking a class!

20th Anniversary July 23rd 2010

Our Anniversary party was held July 23rd 2010. I was unable to attend, but I heard the comment that we had planned for over a year to have it in the pocket park, and because of rain they planned for just a couple hours how to have the party in the city hall. From the pictures it looks like it was a great party. Thank you to Wendy and Marilyn for their great planning and party. The festivities looked awesome! Thanks to Liz for taking pictures of the party.

We met for the July meeting at Hazen High School. We set up a quilt show for the Hazen All-School Reunion. After working the quilt show this morning, I think it was pretty successful. Many people were making positive comments about the quilts. (As they should, we are pretty AWESOME). What is fun, is that people brought out quilts that have been done for people in the Hazen school or by people of Hazen no longer living. Our labels identified people who were connected to the school, but we also had entries from members who had no connection to the school, everything was appreciated!

We had a short meeting in the theater and I didn't really think there would be a lot of show and tell... WRONG! Well I didn't bring my camera because of the stuff I brought for setting up the show... so I used my cell phone... I am sure you will be able to tell the difference. I will photo the show on Saturday morning and put it up later. Until then enjoy the show and tell from our July meeting. We had a few UFO (Unfinished Objects) shown. That is a renewed item this year. We should be seeing a lot of UFO's in the next year. Those participating paid .25 cents per small item or .50 cents for a large quilt and a drawing of prizes will be given out at the end to those who completed and paid for the UFO activity. Sure is one way to get those unfinished projects done... I don't know how many participated, but we have over $75 in the kitty.

Be looking for the photo's from the show in another post... but for now enjoy the show and tell.

June Meeting 2010

Where did the night go... we Got started and Cheryl Klee showed us how to put together "Twist and Shout". Fun Easy pattern. Thanks Cheryl. We had a great lunch... they were promoting summer! Wow, is it actually here. Our meeting went long and pretty uneventful... except watch out... next month if you don't wear your name tag you will have to put in .25 cents into the kitty. Teri will see to it I can tell. And don't think you don't have to introduce yourself just because you don't have show and tell... If you don't have a name tag... You'd better be ready to introduce yourself... At show and tell many said, I don't have anything... leave it up to one person to say "I have a lot, but it is all at home!" Too Funny!

Next month we will meet at Hazen High School and set up for the Reunion Quilt show. We will meet on Thursday July 8, in the gym. We will have our meeting after the set-up.

May Guild Meeting

MaryEllen gave us a great lesson on Bargello ideas. She shared some fun ideas she has come up with from needlepoint magazines. She used striped fabrics and didn't have to sew the fabric into strips. Cool idea. Now we will be on a a lookout for fun striped fabrics...
We have new leaders. Terri and Peggy will lead the way for the next year... Terri said she was nervous... It didn't show a bit... They offered some new suggestions for connecting the group together... Sewing once a month (novel idea!) People just need to let them know they are interested... We also had a offer to start a UFO project again. It is time to do some new things. I hope everyone will come on board and get involved. Your UFO's just have to have a stitch in them to count... More information will be in the June Newsletter.
We had AWESOME show and tell again. I can't believe the quality of the quilter's in our guild. Check out the slide show...

April meeting 2010

We had a guest speaker at our April meeting. "Aneeda Bargain" entertained us with useful tips from ordinary items you could find at home. Not only did she have some great suggestions, but many members chipped in with uses they have for the household items she brought along. Of course, if you are borrowing items from your husband, you many want to make sure you don't damage any of his tools. But many of the items she had brought he wouldn't even miss from the garage/shop. Some of the items are displayed in the slide show, even new lighting for the cap, often we don't have enough lighting when it comes to quilting. She sharpened her rotary scissors by running it over tin foil... (it sounded like her blade was cutting better). She came up with a light box that is relatively cheap. Used washers to make perfect applique' circles. Lots of great ideas! She was hoping some of her friends were also present... Iona Stash, Mega Shopper, Penolope Pinchpenny and Ima Quilter.

We were few in numbers (from a normal guild meeting) but we had LOTS of show and tell. Several people brought piles of quilts... Luella, Gwen, Diana, Cheryl, Peggy... you will see in the slide show. We celebrate our 20th Anniversary being a guild in July. We are looking for small door prizes for this event as well as our 2010 challenge will be displayed also. So get working girls! Enjoy the slide show.

Jan Garman gave us a lesson on quilting as you go. She showed her method to quilt smaller pieces and join them into a large quilt. Very interesting. We had quite a few quilts shown at show and tell. Another great night for show and tell. The Raffle quilt committe showed the top they prepared. It turned out beautiful. Now it will be off to a quilter. We will try to show quilts at the Library this month. Watch for an email if this will happen next week. We actually have a LOT going on this summer and fall. Get ready for a busy summer!!! We had a small turnout for the Jan meeting. (Could have been the cold weather)
But as always the show and tell was still great. We had some fun items on the White Elephant sale. I have already used one of the items I purchased in the sale. Pat, I hope you come to the Feb. meeting so you can see how I used one of your items.

We had a Great Christmas Party in December. If you weren't there you missed a great party. Thanks to our Hostess' The Blocks for the 2010 raffle quilt were put on a special table they look great. Thanks to Teri T. for taking pictures at the last meeting. She dropped her photo card off tonight at my house. She got here before me and my husband and was parked in the driveway with the ambulance with the lights on! My husband drove up and wondered what was going on. Pulled a good one on him! I LOL (laughed out loud) when he told me what he came home too. (Usually I AM home before him...)

October Meeting Show and Tell

The October lesson was given by Diana Shull. She shared her wonderful collection of Mola's from Panama. I took pictures of all the Mola's that she brought and that is primarily what is in the slide show from the meeting. With our Quilt Show last month there wasn't a lot of show and tell to be shown.

We will be having an all day workshop on October 31st. We are calling it "Quilters Treat" Connie Bauer will be leading the workshop. The lesson will be a Jelly Roll quilt. Cutting instructions were handed out at the meeting. They also will be put in the newsletter. Connie said you need 40 fabrics in a Jelly roll.

The Quilters Treat will be held at Hazen City Hall starting at 9 am. Ending time is not determined. Maybe it won't end until all the ghosts and goblins come to get us.
Pot luck lunch will be held. Tricks and treats are also welcome. Pictures of the sample quilt will also be loaded onto the blog page. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Hi all,
We had a good meeting last night. Kathy Repnow did another great lesson on English paperpiecing. We all got kits from www.paperpieces.com. The fabric in the kits was from Blank Textiles. Hopefully everyone will give Grandms's flower garden a try. (good car project, if you're not driving).

Show and tell was good. Clare had two weeks of sewing and lots to show. We had some beautiful tops shown. Check out the slide show. Next month will be the Quilt show. Hope everyone has an opportunity to come to the show. Peggy Cahoon challenged everyone to enter at least one item in this years quilt show. Hope we can all make that challenge.

Hello all.
We again had great attendance at the meeting. It started out looking like show and tell wouls be slim, then Cheryl Klee totally out did herself! She put together some great hospice blocks. some which she had donated kits from Dickenson's Bernina So and Sew shop. (hope I spelled it correctly) VERY NICE OF THEM TO DONATE!

We had a silent auction with oodles of stuff on them... We asked for some volunteers to head up a overnighter... or an over"day"er for those of us who function better in the day time... Talk about it amoungst yourselves...

It only took me all day to get the slide show up... You can move your mouse to the base of the screen and I tried to label the pictures. Not guaranteeing everything is correct! Joel'l Neumiller was our lesson leader. She demonstrated how to make a self-binding receiving blanket. We had a full house again... and some very nice show and tell. I am going to try to upload a slideshow to this website for you to watch our show and tell. Hope you enjoy!

Quilts of Valor

Angie Oster talked to the guild about making quilts for the Quilts of Valor. She gave us a brief history shared a quilt top that was made and offered an opportunity to join in on making quilts of valor in Hazen. The 2nd Tuesday of the month from 4-7 people can work on quilts at Toni Hagel's quilt shop. Starting on Tuesday May 12th. They will meet there once a month as long as there is interest.

May Guild Lesson

We had a great guild lesson last night. "Ask the Experts" was conducted by Kathy Repnow and Diana Shull. tonights discussions were on batting, re-drafting a block to a smaller size, cleaning machines, using brown tone threads for sewing seams and some tricky sewing suggestions. Thanks to our non-experts... remember you have to live over 50 miles and carry a brief case to be an expert.

Getting Started

This is a new venue for our Guild. Possibly a way to connect to each other when we can't meet. Hopefully we can add pictures from Show and tell at our Guild meetings. Post happenings in the quilting world and in North Dakota. The options are endless. I don't have any pictures as of right now... but I will be figuring this out soon.
At any rate... lets get ready for our 19th annual Quilt Show: "A Children's Fantasy"
At our April meeting we got into groups and started the "rip it up for kids" challenge for the September Quilt Show. Dates: Sept. 11-12, 2009.

We had groups of 6 get together and each started with a yard of kid friendly fabric. We ripped the fabric in half and passed the fabric to the next person... continuing to rip in half until we each had a piece of each of the 6 fabrics. Now to the challenge... make a kids quilt out of the fabric! Yes, you can add more fabric to the grouping... Could be an interesting challenge. Good luck to all participants. If you didn't get a chance to participate, bring your yard of fabric to guild in May... More will be ripping it up for kids at the May Meeting.
